The 696ZZ shares the same 6×15×5mm dimensions as the OPEN version, with metal shields (ZZ) added on both sides. These shields are a non-contact closure, leaving a small gap to the inner ring. They keep out a degree of dust and particles from the raceway, and because they don't rub against the inner ring, their effect on running resistance is smaller compared with a contact seal. Whether it ships pre-lubricated depends on the actual supply specification. This structure is typically evaluated for dry environments where solid dust is the main concern.
Metal shields mainly address dry dust and particles. For liquid cutting fluid, water vapor, or wash-down situations, the barrier capability of a non-contact structure should be confirmed separately. Speed and running temperature also affect whether it suits. None of this can be decided from the ZZ designation alone — it comes back to the actual contaminant type and how the bearing runs.
When evaluating the 696ZZ, it helps to share two things first: the contaminant type (dry dust or liquid present) and an approximate speed.
