The 688ZZ is the double metal-shielded version of the 688 miniature deep groove ball bearing. Bore 8mm, outside diameter 16mm, width 5mm. "ZZ" means a metal shield on each side, forming a non-contact structure — a small gap remains between the shield and the inner ring, so they do not touch. This design helps keep out larger contaminant particles, while the running resistance comes from the structure itself rather than seal friction.
Because a gap remains between the shield and the inner ring, metal shields mainly address solid particles and larger debris; their ability to block fine dust, moisture or liquid has limits. Two points are worth confirming: first, the type of contamination — dry dust, or moisture and liquid splash; second, the running conditions, such as speed and whether operation is continuous. If the environment involves liquid or needs higher protection, whether the ZZ version still fits should be confirmed against the actual application.
