The 688 is a miniature deep groove ball bearing, and the 688 OPEN is the version supplied without shields or seals. Bore 8mm, outside diameter 16mm, width 4mm. With an open construction, neither side of the bearing has any built-in covering, so the rolling elements and raceways face the surrounding environment directly. This means dust protection and lubrication retention depend mainly on the surrounding housing design and operating conditions, rather than on the bearing's own shielding.
Because the 688 OPEN has no built-in shielding, two points are worth confirming early. First, how clean the operating environment is — whether there is dust, debris or liquid nearby, and whether the housing already provides external protection. Second, how lubrication is handled — one-time lubrication, or a central supply that needs periodic replenishment. These factors affect whether an open version fits, or whether a shielded version should be considered instead. Suitability still needs to be confirmed against the actual application.
