The 6003ZZ has metal shields on both sides — a non-contact arrangement, where a small clearance is kept between the shield and the inner ring so they do not touch. Compared with the open 6003 OPEN, the ZZ adds a barrier against larger particle contaminants. Compared with the contact-sealed 6003 2RS, the ZZ generally runs with lower resistance because there is no sealing-lip contact. The actual difference still depends on the operating conditions.
The key to a non-contact structure is what kind of contamination it actually helps with. The metal shield blocks larger particles, but because a clearance remains by design, its ability to keep out fine dust, moisture, or liquid is limited. So if your environment is dry and dominated by larger particles, the ZZ can be considered; if moisture, oil splash, or very fine dust is involved, it's worth confirming together whether the protection is adequate.
To judge whether the 6003ZZ fits, two points help to confirm first: ① the contaminant type on site (dry dust / moisture / splash); ② the intended operating speed and temperature range.
