The 6003 OPEN is the open configuration — no metal shields, no rubber seals on either side, leaving the raceway and balls exposed. Compared with the same-size 6003ZZ and 6003 2RS, the difference is not in the core structure but in whether the sides are covered. OPEN hands the lubrication and protection design back to your own housing and mechanism. Suitability still depends on the actual operating conditions.
With no built-in shielding, keeping contaminants out and topping up lubrication generally rely on the equipment itself. If the mounting point already has an oil bath, circulating oil supply, or an external seal in the assembly, the OPEN version can be considered. If it sits in a dusty, damp, or debris-heavy environment, it's worth confirming first whether external protection is sufficient. This isn't something the part number alone can tell you — it has to be matched against the actual installation.
